While watching movies, it’s getting hard totell what is and isn’t real. Thanks to computers, movie makers can now usetheir full imaginations. There’s even a new type of character--made entirely bycomputers—which is getting more and more screen time.
Making the impossible look easyhas always been a part of movie magic. As far back as 1895, filmmakers usedspecial effects in movies. Over the years, many few techniques(技术) were developed. Then, starting inthe 1970s, computers took their place at the center of the process.
One of the first movies towidely use 3D computer generated(生成的,产生的) imagery (CGI) was Tron(1982). In the following years, moreCGI characters were brought to life, one by one. Then, Jurassic park(1993) brought us an island full of man-eating dinosaurs. Shortly afterwards, ToyStory (1995) became the first cartoon made entirely with 3D CGI effects. Itwas a big hit, and audiences loved the characters.
By using “motion capture”technology, filmmakers can make the movements of CGI humans even more lifelike. With this technique, a real actor wears sensors(感受器,传感器) on his face and body. The sensors record theactor’s movements and send the information to a computer. Then the movementsare given to a CGI character. This technique was used to make the creature(生物,有生命的东西) Gollum in the second and third The Lord of the Rings movies(2002,2003). Other films, like Beowulf (2007), have also used motioncapture to help create CGI humans.
It is still rather easy to tellthat a CGI human is not real. But the technology is improving every year. Overtime, many problems ( like the teeth and eyes looking fake) will be solved. Wewill certainly see more CGI animals, monsters, and people in movies and TVshows. The question is – in the future, how many real actors will be put out ofwork by computer actors?
1.What is the main idea?
A.Tron was important in the history ofCGI films.
B. Many people go to themovies to see incredible special effects.
C. More and more filmcharacters are being made by computers.
D. All the humans in Beowulfwere CGI characters.

   A. 1895              B.1982                 C. 1993             D.2003
3.What was special about Gollum?
A.Motion capture was used to help make thecharater.
B. Gollum had an importantrole in a CGI cartoon.
C. He was the only CGIcharacter in the Lord of the Rings.
D. Little money was spent tobring the creature to life.

On December 23, 2008, Niu Niu held a pianoconcert at the national Grand Theater (国家大剧院). As an eleven-year-old boy, he became the youngest pianist ever toperform a concert at the theater.
Never too young to learn
Niu Niu was born into a musical family inXiamen. His father Zhang was a piano teacher. Niu Niu grew up listening to hisfather’s students playing the piano. At just three years old, Niu Niu asked hisfather to teach him to play, too.
“I gave Niu Niu some sheet music and helpedhim find the eight notes when he first played the piano. To my surprise, heplayed nearly 80 percent correct,” said the father. He used to think that threeyears old is too young an age to learn piano, but Niu Niu changed his mind. Hecontinued to allow Niu Niu to watch his teaching of other students and gave himmore sheet music to play.
Playing for fun
Zhang started teaching Niu Niu standard pianolessons when he was four. Unlike many other piano teachers, Zhang didn’t insistthat Niu Niu play strictly with the correct finger positioning (位置). He said that the strict fingerpositioning would rob some kids of fun of playing. So Niu Niu could play in hisown way. He could play the tone successfully. But Niu Niu was required to playthe music without looking at the sheet music. Now he can remember about 80pages.
Rising to fame
In 2003, at the age of 6, Niu Niusuccessfully held a sole concert in his hometown Xiamen. At the age of 8, hegave a performance at the International Piano Festival in France. At the age of10, Niu Niu played in London and his performance was praised by Prince Charles.Last year, this young pianist published his first album “Niu Niu Plays Mozart”and over 10,000 copies have been sold in the world.
